China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba has demonstrated a new payment  system which will allow virtual reality users to pay for their shopping in future simply by nodding their heads.

The new VR Pay technology is an effort by the company to invest in the latest technology introduced in online shopping. Earlier in 2015, the company also introduced a facial recognition technology for making payments on Alipay. Alibaba advertised the payment method as ‘pay with a selfie’.

The new VR technology means people browsing through virtual reality shopping malls while using virtual reality goggles will be able to pay for their shopping just by nodding or looking. The users do not have to take off their goggles.

“It is very boring to have to take off your goggles for payment. With this, you will never need to take out your phone”, says Lin Feng who is associated to F Lab, an incubator of Ant Financial. Identity of the users can be verified through account logins or voice print system which is capable of recognizing a person’s voice due to its uniqueness.

According to Feng, this is the most expedient payment method in VR as compared to other technologies of biometric recognition. However, the user still needs to provide a password. The user can also provide the password by touch, head movement or continuously looking at a point on virtual display for more than 1.5 seconds.

The new payment technology is expected to be launched by the end of 2016. Ant Financial says that its new VR Pay technology can make virtual reality “a tool rather than just a toy” by connecting different app developers and virtual reality goggle makers  to Alipay.

The new technology was demonstrated by Ant Financial Services Group in Shenzhen  this Wednesday. The group operates China’s biggest online payment platform Alipay with more than 450 million users everyday.
