Why Wi-Fi, When LIIIIIGHT-FI?

When the developing countries all over the world are struggling to give their citizens an uninterrupted and fast internet connection preferably through Wi-Fi , professor Haas from the University of Edinburgh has proposed a far better technology called Li-fi (light fidelity) which addresses the limitations of Wi-Fi in a convincing manner. The mind boggling component of this technology is LED light. The source of light like bulbs can now just be replaced with LED and then can be used as data transmitters.

In his appearance on TED talks , professor Haas highlights that why exactly the wi-fi technology has become obsolete in the modern world. He tells us about the 4 main issues with wi-fi that is of“capacity, efficiency, availability, security” . He goes on to explain that as the demand and usage of internet increases so does the limited amount of radio waves spectrum available , decreases .The data transmission in wi-fi is done by radio waves. He questions the efficiency of the 1.4 million data transmission units all over the world which consumes enormous amount of energy , just to cool them down. He highlights the most common problem that is the availability and security of wi-fi connections.

The new technology Li-fi not only nullifies the above mentioned drawbacks but has wide applications that can be seen in the future. Some of the interesting usage of Lifi that Haas has mentioned but are not limited to in his talk includes the data transmission between cars and traffic lights using the head lights of the cars , which results in avoiding accidents at time. Apart from that the lights in airplanes can be used for net connectivity ending the much dreaded FLIGHT mode.

Light being the component of Li-fi has solved many issues, the reason being that it is easily available, very capacious ,it can be controlled and its intensity can be manipulated . As the light cannot pass through solid boundaries , the data transmission remains secure and uninterrupted.

Although this technology has huge benefits ,there are some limitations also. Li-Fi’s biggest drawback, is its inability to provide uninterrupted internet connection outdoors with visible light from the Sun, because the daylight would interfere with its signal.  Besides, it cannot penetrate through walls like WiFi does, hence, the user needs to be in close proximity of the LED source to get uninterrupted signal.
