On Tuesday, Maharashtra police has raided three call centers in Mira Road and over 500 call center staff including top officials were arrested and questioned all night after raids for scamming US citizens. The raid was done by around 200 policemen.
The call center's employees would pretend as US revenue department officials and blackmail Americans in the name of tax irregularities. They used to ask their bank details, which the employees used to hack into accounts to cheat them for money.
Police officer Paramvir Singh, said, "We have detained around 700-800 people. It is an international racket."
Superintendent of Police (SP), Dr Mahesh Patil, while confirming the raids, said the call centers were under the radar after similar ones were recently raided in Ahmedabad.
The employees pretending to be a US revenue department officials, used to use a software to call US citizens by which the receiver will see US number displayed on the phone. Also the employees were trained to speak in American accents.
Police says that, daily turnover of such dealings was estimated to be over Rs 1 crore.
