Karuna Gopal has been appointed as the chief consultant for India’s 100 Smart City Project. She earlier served as a consultant in the project.

Karuna Gopal, a renowned consultant and and internationally acclaimed leader has designed India’s 100 smart city project. The lady has now been appointed as the chief consultant of the 100 Smart City Mission proposed by Government of India. Gopal is also the founder of the organisation The Foundation for Futuristic Cities that has motivated urban transmutation in our country since a long time.
Karuna has been born and brought up in Hyderabad and belonged to a middle-class family. At a raw age of 13, she suffered from a cardiac arrest but fortunately she was able to survive. The doctors had declared her dead but by God’s grace, she got back to life surprising everyone. She started working for NIIT soon after she completed her higher secondary studies. Karuna also practiced computer designing simultaneously.
She later started a virtual organisation which comprised of various famous designers across the globe. Her organisation provided consultancy for designing and constructing smart cities in various countries. These included well-developed countries like Singapore, Vietnam and Australia.
Karuna recently set up an organisation in her hometown Hyderabad named The Foundation for Futuristic Cities. The foundation started off with a vision of “Vibrant Cities for a Vibrant India”. Her organisation deals in smart economic development, smart procurement and partnerships. It also focuses on social equity and sustainability. In collaboration with government, technical and corporate partners, her organisation is designing a smart city protocol for cities in India.
The lady also worked with Department for International Development, UK as an institutional development expert. She also served as a subject matter expert for USAID projects of the World Bank. She lately contributed as a senior advisor to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in support of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission. In 2015, she represented India in the speaker delegation at the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC), PARIS.
Karuna comes from a family of civil servants, IAS officers and freedom fighters. She is also currently a guest faculty with IAS, Indore.
