Technology is now an indispensable part of education. With this has come up an Edu-Tech market with all sorts of startups aiming to build better academic tools with technology and innovation.
Sahil Chalana of BITS Pilani too decided to build a tool that helps students in finding the right college. Launched in 2014, the startup Collegedunia already has a database covering 20,000 colleges and universities. Now with the launch of its mobile app, the startup aims at streamlining the whole admission process.
In a very short span of time, Collegedunia has positioned itself as a leading college search platform enabling students to explore various options and compare them.
According to Alexa stats, the site now ranks 1120 nationally and 19,000 globally which is a remarkable achievement within a span of two years. The site is witnessing great traffic rate with 60,000 visitors daily. Collegedunia is also maintaining its bounce rate at 31% and the average time spent on site being 12.54 minutes, which is quite appreciable.
Collegedunia recorded 7 million unique visitors last year and 10 million in total. Out of this, the highest percentage is of Under Graduate aspirants accounting for 60% of the total traffic. The Post Graduate aspirants contribute to 37% of the traffic followed by 3% of others. Most looked up courses are of engineering and management.
And now in its bid to provide a more personalized search and admission program to the aspirants, the company has launched its mobile app too.
Leveraging mobile technology
To cater to the increasing mobile web traffic on its site, the edu-tech startup has recently launched its mobile app to reach tech-savvy students. With its mobile app, the startup aims to rationalize the admission process and make it hassle free for the students. The app has already recorded more than 25,000 installs and a rating of 4.6 on Play store in a short course of 2 months and is aiming for more.
The site gathers information about various entrance exams and colleges based up on various parameters including ranking, alumni record, placements, faculty and extra-curricular activities.
The app’s most validated content and a very interactive user interface has landed it among country’s top education portals.
The app lists colleges city-wise and state-wise and enables students to see brief and relevant data based upon various filters such as course, location, fee, ranking and placement etc., about numerous colleges and compare them, all at one place.
The app lets one browse courses in 20 streams and further filter out the results based on factors such as full time, part time and distance courses. The company launched the app to be “on your fingertips admission assistance” providing all the relevant details on college’s placement stats, course fee, faculties and sports facilities anytime and anywhere eliminating the need to rummage through multiple college sites for announcement of admission dates, results and release of admission forms etc.
From entrance exams to college
The app offers information in 3 major categories – colleges, courses and exams. It offers information about over 20,000 colleges and 6,000 courses. Apart from its colleges and courses sections, what appears to be really helpful for aspirants is the Exams section. The exam section of Collegedunia app provides more relevant content than the other websites in the same sector.
It keeps one updated about dates and results of various latest exams including JEE, CAT, AIPMT etc. It not just provides information on engineering and medical exams but also about exams in other fields of study including Science, Pharmacy, Law, Paramedical, Veterinary Sciences, Computer Applications, Education and Agriculture.
Allowing student feedback with its “Write a Review” campaign
Adding another dimension to the college search, Collegedunia has recently launched “Write a Review” campaign. The app allows one to write a review of the college that will prove to be very helpful for aspirants seeking admission to the college. It already has 50,000 live reviews.
Students usually look at the ranking of the college, average package offered and number of placements done while selecting the college. But, for some other factors might be important. This affect has been further intensified by college advertisements talking loud about rank and placement. The insider reviews can help a long way in busting this and give some real insights about college.
The app allows you to shortlist as many colleges you are interested in and keeps track of updates regarding all those colleges. The way data is presented is very elegant and easy to understand - only ‘to the point’ facts along with high quality images that give a deep insight of the college.
This non – conventional education portal works both ways. Where at one hand it provides relevant and brief information to students about the colleges, on the other side it generates quality leads i.e., highly – motivated aspirants for the colleges. The algorithm used by the platform can segregate data based on multiple filters.
For now only the Android version is available. The company is yet to launch the iOS version.
Up till now
Sahil Chalana, a BITS Pilani graduate initially launched a startup by the name of “getmyform.in” – an education form startup, which unfortunately didn’t work out well. He noticed that the data available about the colleges wasn’t sufficient for the aspirants to make a well – informed and satisfying choice. So Sahil and his team improvised on the existing model and came up with the concept of “Collegedunia”. It was officially launched in 2014. It was bootstrapped for 6 months and finally raised Rs. 3 crore funding from Umang Kumar (CEO, Gaadi.com) in November 2014.
What started as a small bunch of like-minded individuals, Collegedunia is now 100 employees strong. Himanshu Jain, a graduate from PEC Chandigarh is currently serving as the CTO at the company. Nishit Kumar (an ex-IDS Infotech employee) leads the content management team at Collegedunia. Sanjay Meena (a DCE graduate) leads the sales team while Ashish Kumar (an NIT Jalandar Graduate) takes care of the operations.
Collegedunia aims at providing counseling through the app in near future. It is also aiming to reach a target of 1 lakh visitors per day and one million app downloads in the coming few months. The startup’s current focus is on Indian students. However, it is also planning to venture abroad and establish the same model for those who are seeking admissions abroad.
